Useful Information on Cambodia
Capital city: Phnom Penh
Official language: Khmer
Currency: The local currency is Cambodian Riel (KHR) although US dollars are widely accepted all over the country. In practice, US dollars are used for most transactions over US$1. In certain border areas with Thailand it is possible to use Thai Baht. The major currency exchange rates (on April 20, 2010) are: 1 USD = 4200 KHR, 1 EUR = 5600 KHR, 1 GBP = 6300 KHR
General: The Kingdom of Cambodia), formerly known as Kampuchea, is a country in Southeast Asia that borders Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the north and Vietnam to the east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand. Cambodia remains heavily affected by land mines and mined areas are frequently unmarked. It is therefore advisable not to stray off main routes in rural areas, including around temple complexes. Cambodia is a member of the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Telephone country code: +855, Internet: .kh, Electricity: 220V 50Hz
Major cities: Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville (Kampong Saom), Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, Ta Khmau, Pursat, Kampong Speu, Takeo.
Phnom Penh is the kingdom's capital and largest city, and is the principal centre for economics, industrial, commerce and cultural centres of Cambodia.
Major international airports:
- Phnom Penh International Airport, formerly Pochentong International Airport (PNH)
- Siem Reap International Airport also known as Angkor International Airport (REP)
- Sihanoukville International Airport also known as Kang Keng Airport (KOS)
A charge of $25 per person is levied on departure for passengers on international flights. A smaller charge may be levied for domestic flights. You need a visa for Cambodia. Visas for Cambodia can be obtained on arrival at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap International airports and some other border points. The current price is US $20 for a one-month tourist visa. A tourist visa can be extended only for one extra month. A business visa costs US $25 for one month and can be renewed indefinitely. Two passport photographs are required and should be brought with you. You should ensure that your passport is stamped on arrival.
Ports and terminals: Phnom Penh, Kampong Saom (Sihanoukville)
Taxis: There are many 'share' taxis in Cambodia to various destinations. You can often hire them individually or pay for a seat and wait for other passengers to turn up. Minibuses cover similar routes. As a tourist it is also easy to move from one place to one another using 'moto-taxis'. The drivers all wear base-ball caps which makes them easy to spot. It is, along with the tuk-tuk, the best and cheapest way to travel inside a city.
Money: ATMs are available in Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap. Not all banks accept international cards and you should check with your own bank prior to travel as to whether your card may be used abroad. Credit cards are not widely used, but a few hotels and businesses in larger cities accept them. Travellers cheques can be exchanged at many banks and bureau de change.
Casinos in SihanoukVille (Kampong Saom): SihanoukVille's gambling selection is expanding. Most standard casino games are available and bets start from 1 cent on slot machines to thousands of dollars on baccarat. Sports betting can be found on the street at places like Cambo Six, and is set to take off in a big way in the coming months. A few bars around town have Texas Hold'em Poker games on certain nights of the week. Casinos in SihanoukVille all pay out in US Dollars, but a host of major currencies are accepted and exchanged, including Euros, Yen, Thai Baht, Yuan and the Cambodian Riel. When you buy-in chips, the casinos require that you do that at the cash desk and not at the tables. If you try to buy-in chips at the tables, there is normally someone there that will take your money to the cash desk and get you the chips. Odds and table rules vary slightly between the casinos, so be sure to ask or read the house rules beforehand. All the casinos in SihanoukVille give comp drinks, cigarettes, cigars and meals. They will also comp you a free room and other services if you notify them when changing in your money (usually $500 and up). Rooms at the casino hotels generally start at $25 to $35 per night. And accommodation around or near the casinos go for as little as $5 a night. If you are planning to visit, it is advisable that you reserve a room in advance.
